Moving to Texas: Take a Historic Tour of Iconic Brenham, the County Seat of the ‘Birthplace of Texas’

On March 2, 1836, Brenham was etched in history as the county seat of Washington-on-the-Brazos, also known as the Birthplace of Texas. Here, 59 men gathered to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence, granting the Lone Star State independence from Mexico. And the area’s history has only gotten more iconic. If you are considering buying a home in Brenham, here are a few places in town that could provide a clear picture of this history and its importance to the people of Brenham.

Downtown Brenham

Brenham’s more-than-impressive history is its main claim to fame, and nowhere is this more evident than in Downtown Brenham. The heart of the community, the town center is a hub for culinary, cultural, and artistic experiences. Everything from the restaurants and shops to the buildings and homes for sale in Brenham is a piece of Brenham’s history. Downtown Brenham also houses the iconic Toubin Park.

Toubin Park

No trip to Brenham is complete without a tour of Toubin Park. Located underground, this attraction is an extensive system of cisterns built in the late 1800s to enable firefighting efforts in Brenham. The cisterns were used to store rainwater and are a rare sight designated a Texas Antiquities Landmark. During your tour, you will learn why Brenham residents built the cisterns and how they, and the early railroad, factor into the town’s history.

Brenham Fire Museum

Another fire-related attraction, the Brenham Fire Museum, is a must-visit. You will learn about why the town was burned and how the museum was established in 1867 to protect the lives and property of Brenham folk. You will also see the rare antique fire engines that led the charge, including the Invader purchased in 1950, the rare Silby Fire Engine, and the 1923 Samanthe, which is one of only three such engines in existence today.

Brenham Heritage Museum

Located in Downtown Brenham, the Brenham Heritage Museum is a cache of local history text and artifacts, including art collections and exhibits depicting the history of Washington County. The building was once a Post Office and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a historic treat in itself. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 to 2.

Glissman’s Gift Gallery

If you like combining sightseeing with some light shopping, head to Glissman’s Gift Gallery. The gallery is actually a one-of-a-kind gift shop that sells collectibles, antiques, and other items that call to mind the history and culture of Brenham. The building is a two-story masonry-style mansion built in the 1860s by J.T. Parnell. Located Downtown, it is a great way to end a day of exploration.
